Greg Lyons

The founder and visionary behind Grooveworks, Greg Lyons suddenly left us in early 2024 after being diagnosed with late stage pancreatic cancer. We have continued his vision and stay dedicated to creating an open and collaborative environment for musicians at all levels.

Greg Lyons was a British composer, performer and recording artist. Based in Singapore, he established himself as a musical force with a commitment to making original music of an eclectic nature combining elements of his whole musical evolution - which includes representations of jazz, classical, funk, rock, pop, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, avant-garde, folk and lots more.

His concept of "organic" composition/performance created music that defies genre or classification and communicates at many levels. He tied together the insistence of impeccable groove with the ethos of jazz, putting the ultimate control within the spontaneity of the moment.

The albums he released feature mostly his smaller groups, and he also composed for groups of up to 19 members. His most famous 10-piece group Omniform appeared in Singapore regularly.

It was also a mission of his to teach what he has learned to young musicians, so that they might find the true essence of their expression in music. He was a committed educator with extensive experience of under- and post-graduate teaching and curriculum development. His brain child Grooveworks changed the way Singaporean-based musicians engaged in the process of group jazz performance.

Over the past decades he operated mostly out of South East Asia. He led bands involving most of the major jazz figures of the region, and appeared with many top Asian artists. His released works can be found here on Spotify:
