PERFORMANCE

WORKSHOPS

Grooveworks mission is to provide a serious growth opportunity for the budding jazz stars of Southeast Asia. We create a workshop environment for the focused study of jazz performance. The groups that make up the main program are structured as performing units, with regular recordings for analysis leading towards the final performances at the end of the 10-week cycle, which we share on our YouTube channel and other social media platforms. Each recorded performance is a representation of the ensemble’s development, and our media output provides an opportunity for an audience to witness the actual process of development featuring many of the new crop of jazz performers currently in the region.

A whole different way of listening to music

"I can still remember almost 7-8 years ago when I attended my first Groove Works class, I was introduced to a whole different way of listening to music. And in the next 2+ years that I kept at it, can honestly say that Greg Lyons opened my ears and my mind to a approach and an attitude of playing music that I bring to a lot of different areas of my life. Having taken my musical journey to some pretty distant places and then back again, I'm so glad to be paying homage by attending Groove Works once again. I'm all set for another exciting months of stretching myself playing-wise."

What People Are Saying

“What I like about Greg's teaching is that his guidance was focused on preparing his students to make real music in real-life situations.

His teaching emphasizes the importance of each and every instrumentalist's role in the ensemble. For me (a pianist), he stressed on the importance of listening to the soloist and rhythm section carefully so that I can comp at the right time and make tasteful decisions.”

— Rachma

“I have been looking for something like Grooveworks for a long time, and what I envisioned as the perfect learning environment, Greg has perfected in Grooveworks.

Not only am I learning how to improvise better collaborating with other musicians, I am meeting and networking with like-minded musicians. I’m making lifelong friendships in the process.”

— Justin

“Greg shares with students his unique approach to music and improvisation. Anyone who admires Greg as a musician will be even more impressed with him as an educator and mentor.

This course is ideal for anyone interested in becoming a better musician. To this day, I’ll never dare to ‘practice’ while playing a gig, for the gig is AN EVENT, and for that, I have to thank Greg – I learnt that from him.”
